talesman
A person called to act as a juror from among the bystanders in a court. |
Tangible Personal Property Memorandum (TPPM)
- A legal document that is referred to in a will and used to guide the distribution of tangible personal property. |

Temporary Restraining Order (TRO)
- Prohibits a person from an action that is likely to cause irreparable harm. This differs from an injunction in that it may be granted immediately, without notice to the opposing party, and without a hearing. It is intended to last only until a hearing can be held. |
testamentary trust
A trust set up by a will. |

testimony
Evidence given by a competent witness, under oath, as distinguished from evidence derived from writings and other sources. |
third-party claim
An action by the defendant that brings a third party into a lawsuit. |

transcript
The official record of proceedings in a trial or hearing. |
transitory
Actions are "transitory" when they might have taken place anywhere, and are "local" when they could occur only in some particular place. |

traverse
In pleading, to traverse signifies to deny. When a defendant denies any material allegation of fact in the plaintiffs declaration, he or she is said to traverse it. |
trust agreement or declaration
The legal document that sets up a living trust. Testamentary trusts are set up in a will. |

tariff
A form of tax on goods from a foreign country used for the purpose of attaining economic results. |
tenancy at sufferance
A tenancy that exists only when a tenate wrongfully extends his or her tenancy beyond the term agreed upon. |

tenancy at will
A possession interest in which no specific time of lease is agreed upon. |
tenancy by the entirety
A form of joint ownership of property by husband and wife in which both have the right to the entire property,and upon the death of one, the other has title. |

tenancy for years
The most common type of possession interest in which the lease is for a specific period of time. |
tenancy in common
A form of joint ownership of property by two or more persons in which any owner's interest can be sold, transferred, or inherited. |

tenant
The person who agrees to pay for the use of real property. |
tender to payment
A money offer of payment of an obligation. |
|
tender of performance
An offer to perform that is considered evidence of a party's willingness to fulfill the terms of a contract. |
term insurance
A form of pure life insurance that does not include a savings feature. |

termination by lapse of time
When an opportunity to form a contract ends because the offeree fails to accept an offer within the time specified. |
testator
A person who makes a will. |

testamentary capacity
The requirement that a testator be of sound ming and legal age. |
third-party beneficiary
Someone who is not a party to a contract but is intended by the contracting parties to benefit as a consequence of a contract. |

title
Ownership and the right to possess property has been given up by renting it to someone else. |
title insurance
A form of insurance that assures the buyer that there are no other claims to tile. |

tort
A private wrong that injures another person's physical well-being, property, or reputation. |
touting
When an investor who owns shares of a company's stock posts notices online that indicate that the value of the stock will increase. |

trade sanction
Also known as an embargo, a law enacted by a nation that prohibits trade with specific countries for the purpose of achieving political results. |
transient
A guest whose stay is relatively uncertain. |

transnational institutions
Institutions established by several countries that agree to be legally bound by the rules of the organization. |
traveler's check
A certified check, useful when traveling in foreign countries, that is issued in denominations of $10 or more by certain banks, travel agencies, and financial services companies. |

treason
The levying of war against the United States, or giving of aid and comfort to the nation's enemies. |
trust
A device or mechanism that permits personal or real property to be held by one party, the trustee, for the benefit of another, the beneficiary. |

trustee
A person who is entrusted with the management and control of another's property or the rights associated with the property. |
